Office etiquette – standards to abide by

As with any workplace, in an office it is important that you stick to some (often unspoken rules) to make sure that you not only fit in, but that you make a good impression on both your fellow employees and those higher up the chain.

Most of these office etiquette tips are quite frankly common sense, but many people have been caught out by them leading to awkward situations. Find out how you can keep your head down and make the right impression in the office.

Neat and tidy

It’s a basic for any job, but you’d be amazed at how many people can fail to properly attire and present themselves for their job. It is absolutely your responsibility to represent your workplace, and the last thing you want to do is unconsciously show yourself up.

So even if you’re hitting the gym before work, make sure you’ve got time to shower! And as for your clothes, make sure that they comply with any dress codes that are in place.

Being discreet on social media

We’ve all heard those horror stories of people losing their jobs for some serious overshare on social media, so there is no harm being discreet. You can always put workmates on a restricted view on your social media accounts (highly recommended for those higher up who friend request you too). It’s better to say too little than too much.

Staying punctual

It’s a simple thing to do, but so many people end up being pulled up about their punctuality. If you find yourself frequently arriving a little later than you should be, then you’ve got to make the effort – others are relying on you. Get up earlier or alter your commute to ensure that you aren’t making yourself look bad.

Office etiquette may seem old-fashioned, but it is important, so make the effort!
